Because the simplest answer is probably: yes, I am a graphic designer.

For a long time, I also referred to myself that way.

I run a brand studio, I've been designing since 2014, and for many years, this description felt natural to me. It was simple, understandable, and convenient. When someone asked me what I do, I could answer in one sentence, without going into detail.

However, over time, I began to feel that this word didn't fully capture what I truly do.

Because even though I ultimately provide clients with graphic files, logos, identity elements, or websites, I increasingly see that these are more the result of our work than its essence.

This is precisely why I began to reflect on my true role in client interactions, and whether I should indeed refer to myself as a graphic designer.

Am I really selling a logo? That I don't primarily discuss projects with them.

The creation of a logo itself or the selection of colors isn't what excites me most. Of course, I still greatly enjoy design, aesthetics, and the entire creative process, but I've noticed that something else interests me most. It's who this person is, what distinguishes them, how they want to feel within their brand, how they want to be perceived, and why they actually do what they do.

And for a long time, it seemed to me that perhaps I was overthinking all of this. That maybe my need for analyzing, inquiring, delving into the brand owner's personality, seeking meaning and value was a bit of an over-elaboration.

After all, the client came for branding or visual identity, so why delve so deeply into it? But today, I see that for me, this is the only proper way to work. At least with the clients I truly want to work with.

Over time, I also noticed that a huge part of this work begins even before the design phase. It starts with the right questions. That's why I created my own package of forms and briefs for designers, which helps to delve much deeper into the client's brand and go beyond superficial answers.

My ideal clients need more than just a “pretty design.”

And I think that's very important here. Because there are people for whom a brand is simply a sales tool.
And that's perfectly fine. But there are also people for whom a brand is something much more personal. A way of expressing themselves. A way of creating their own reality, fulfilling a dream, or trying to build a life more on their own terms.

And these are the people who most often come to me. For them, it is very important that the brand truly represents them. That what they surround themselves with, what they show the world, and what they create has meaning. That it is consistent with them, and not just "pretty."

And that's where I see my role today – in helping someone discover and articulate what is often still unsaid. In bringing out things that the person intuitively feels but cannot yet translate into the language of brand, communication, or imagery.

I think many designers eventually reach a point where they no longer just want to design, but to consciously build a studio and a life that truly makes sense, financially as well. That's why I created material on pricing your work based on your vision for your studio and life – I invite you if you feel this resonates with you.

A well-designed brand impacts not only clients but also the owner.

For a long time, I believed that the greatest value of branding lay in what is most commonly discussed: good design builds trust, increases perceived value, makes people willing to pay more, and helps acquire clients faster.

And all of this is true – it genuinely works. Over time, however, I discovered something that seems even more crucial to me. A well-designed brand influences how the brand owner operates within their own business. And I feel that this is very rarely discussed.

Imagine you are attending a networking event or a business meeting where you are meant to meet new people, converse, perhaps gain clients, or establish valuable connections.

Now, imagine you remembered this event literally moments before. You rush out of the house in stained sweatpants, with your hair haphazardly tied, feeling tired, stressed, and completely unprepared.

How will you feel upon entering that room?

You will probably want to hide, remain inconspicuous, avoid speaking, and not draw any attention to yourself. You might even feel embarrassed.

Now, imagine the opposite situation.

You arrive prepared. Dressed in a way that makes you feel authentic, comfortable, at ease, and confident. You enter the same room with an entirely different energy. You are more eager to converse, more willing to present yourself, and find it easier to speak up.

And a brand works in precisely the same way.

If you feel that your brand looks amateurish, does not truly represent you, has something unfinished about it, or you simply see an “old version of yourself” in it, what is the likelihood that you will confidently present it to others?

That you will speak about it with pride?

That you will promote it with ease?

The problem is often not the design itself.

A poorly functioning brand does not always mean that the brand is unattractive or badly designed.

Because one can have a brand that is aesthetic, professional, and refined, yet feel completely disconnected from it.

One might look at it and feel, 'This is no longer me.' That it represents an old version of oneself, a past stage, or a way of thinking that has simply been outgrown.

And then, immense resistance arises to showing this brand to the world.

Therefore, I believe that the weakest link in any business is very often not the offer, algorithm, or strategy, but the brand owner themselves. Their mindset, their relationship with their own brand, and their sense of whether they can truly identify with it.

And that is precisely why I believe that well-executed branding has a tremendous impact on business development. Not only because it looks professional and builds trust, but because it makes the owner begin to operate differently.

Speaks about their brand with greater confidence.
Engages with people more boldly.
More readily showcases their work and invites others into their world.

Are you sure you can call yourself a graphic designer?

This brings us back to the beginning, because while you may indeed be a graphic designer, it is worth reconsidering whether you can truly call yourself one.

I also collaborate with graphic designers and visual artists who excel in this role. Perhaps you are more interested in the person behind the brand than in the design itself, and how that brand can help them enter the next stage of their business.

And I think it's worth asking yourself this question honestly to understand what you actually do, how you help, and what role you play in this whole process.
